The results of experimental and theoretical study of initial stage of water drop velocity relaxation in the flow behind shock wave are reported in the paper. The conditions of two known modes of drop interaction with flow were modeling: 1) sheet stripping mode; 2) wave crest stripping mode. The range of Weber number 200 < We < 5000 was investigated, which take place at the flow Mach number 0,15–0,55. Physical model of early stage of drop velocity relaxation is suggested for the linear approach of the cross-section size growth. Satisfactory agreement of the model with the experiments is shown. Keywords:
shock waves, drop-gas mixtures, velocity relaxation, aerodynamic drag.
