The physical principles of operation of cascaded Gas Electron Multipliers (GEMs), their properties and some physical effects related to their performance are considered. In particular, the mechanisms of electron avalanching in noble gases are studied, including those at high densities and low temperatures; also the effects of ion backflow and photon and ion feedback are studied.

Keywords:
gas electron multipliers, noble gases, ionization coefficients, ion backflow.
