The paper analyzes the role of R. Carnap in the paradigm shift from the concept of language as a universal medium to the concept of language as a calculus within the framework of the semantic tradition in philosophy. Itis shown that in the application of his method of extension and intension Carnap was close to creating the semantics of possible worlds, but failed to make generalizations in the treatment of modal concepts. In this sense,
Carnap remained a supporter of the monolinguistic view.
Keywords: semantics, syntax, language, logic, Carnap.
