Abstract
The article deals with the early Russian borrowings in the Buryat language. It is shown how contacts between two nations with different material and spiritual culture, and their ways of life cause a mutual exchange, including household items, farming and borrowing of their names. Moreover, in the initial period of contacts this process is reciprocal. The Russian vocabulary of agriculture and national clothes came into the Buryat language, while the Buryat cattle vocabulary penetrated the Russian language of Transbaikalia. These borrowings are still widely used in the language of fiction, at the same time some of them, as in the source language, have already become archaisms. Historical markedness of early Russianisms is clearly demonstrated in the language of Shenehen Buryats now living in the Autonomous Region of Inner Mongolia (China) after their exodus in 1920-1930s. A research of borrowings, if correlated historically and chronologically, reveals the history of contacting peoples and contributes to better understanding of the comparative-historical linguistic issues.
